Kazan got its historical symbols
Today, Kazan got back its coat of arms and flag, forgotten for almost 80 years. Chairman of Heraldic Council to the RF President, RF State Heroldmeister Georgy Vilinbakh handed Kazan Mayor Kamil Iskhakov at the Kazan Deputies Council a certificate of the coat of arms and the flag of the Tatar capital being recorded to RF State Heraldic register.
Having greeted with the memorable day, Kamil Iskhakov underlined, we are witnesses of our city symbols revival. For a long Kazan had no symbol, neither its birthday – now it is in the past. “It is symbolic that the day when we received of our coat of arms and flag coincided with certificate on RT State symbols recognition handed to President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev. It is not by accident, Day of the city and Day of the Republic also coincide”, he noted.
The scholars date the first image of the coat of arms in the form of Zilant back to 12th-14th centuries. Kazan coat of arms was approved by Empress Ekaterina II decree in 18th century. In 1926 RSFSR Peoples Commissars Council adopted a resolution on forbidding the use of stamps with city symbols on them that were approved in tsar period. In recent years Kazan Deputies Council and the city administration repeatedly appealed to this question, though it had not been solved. According to Russia and Tatarstan Heraldists expertise the present coat of arms and the flag of Kazan corresponds to all basic requirements of armoury, are based on historic symbol of Kazan and included to RF State Heraldic register and RT State Heraldic register.
Kamil Iskhakov cordially thanked RF Chief Heroldmeister Georgy Vilinbakh for his assistance, advice and consultations in the revival of Kazan coat of arms.
