Galiaskar Kamal
(1879 - 1933)

Kamaletdinov Galiaskar Kamal (1879-1933) was born in Kazan, in the family of handicraft-man, in 1979. He got education at the Kazan medrese “Gosmaniya” (religious school), and then in the medrese “Mukhammadiya” (1889-1897). At the same time he did a three-year course of Russian in a city college. The first play by Kamal, titled “Unhappy Young Man”, was published in 1900. It was the staging of his play “Miserable Child”, which marked the beginning of the Tatar theatre history. As an actor and playwright G. Kamal took part in the work of “Saiyar” performing company.

His wide-ranging educational activity implied editing the democratic newspaper “Azat Khalyk” (“Independent Nation”), publishing center organizing and selling books.

The creative activity of G. Kamal gained in scope after 1905, when being impressed by the events of the first Russian revolution, he wrote the plays “The First Theatre”, “Bankrupt” and others.

G. Kamal in one of the initiators of translating works by Russian writers into Tatar. He translated “Marriage” and “Inspector” by N. V. Gogol, “Thunderstorm” by A. N. Ostrovsky, and “On the Bottom” by A. M. Gorky.
