Baki Urmanche (1897 - 1991)
 Baki I. Urmanche is a painter and graphic artist, who created hundreds of works in different genres. B. Urmanche was born on the 23 of February 1897 in the village Cherken of the Tetyushsky Uyezd of the Kazan Gubernia (now it is the Buinsky district of Tatarstan). He got primary education in a religious college, the Kazan medrese “Mukhammmadiya”.
The beginning of B. I. Urmanche’s creative activity fell on the period of impetuous revolutionary changes in the 1820th. Having graduated from the Moscow Art-Engineering Institute, he headed the Kazan Art College (1926-1929). It took him a lot of time and energy to give another birth and further development to the Kazan Arts School.
In the prime of his life he created a unique gallery of portraits of historical and artistic figures. This stage of his art marked wide popularity of the mature painter, immense prestige and people’s recognition. The many-sided talent of Baki Urmanche covered such important spheres of art as sculpture, painting, drawing, and theatre scenery and costume and art studies. Works by B. I. Urmanche had been exhibiting; his pictures and sculptures are shown in many museums of our country. The monuments, created by him, decorate streets and squares of cities and villages.
His genuine interest to inner world of people is mostly obvious in the genre of portrait. The collection of his portrait paintings is bright and impressing. He depicts the main thing in a character, his life and soul, exposing creative sources and representing a whole epoch, which his heroes belong to, within one composition.
The heritage, left by B. Urmanche, implies portraits of Tatar artistic figures, such as medieval poet Kul-Gali, scientists and enlighteners Sh. Mardjani, K. Nasyri, poet Dermend, writer F. Amirkhan and others.
